The first control method used against pests and diseases was genetic resistance. Thus, since the beginning of agriculture, plants with improved agronomic characteristics able to crop in the pres ence of parasites and pathogens have been select
ed and used. From 1900 onwards this selection has been on a scientific basis. Efforts by breeders since the 1950s have led to the creation of many resistant varieties.
