ABSTRACT

In the modern world, organizations are faced with rapid change, political, legal, economic, social, technological and competitive. A proactive approach to training and development is needed to maintain a competitive advantage. New technology has provided new delivery systems such as e-learning for education and training. It would be very short-sighted to ignore these developments. The corporate learning centre approach, incorporating Internet-based e-learning programmes, is an essential ingredient of any progressive training and development strategy, a useful addition to the range of training resources, and a positive response to managing change. There are many reasons why employees might resist the idea of learning through corporate learning centres, including natural resistance to change, fear of the unknown, technophobia, work pressures, an unsupportive organizational climate, lack of learning skills, poor motivation, unenthusiastic management, special needs and domestic or other commitments. This chapter explores these resistances in some more detail, and suggests ways in which they might be overcome.
