ABSTRACT
Metaphors have been employed to explain music as a phenomenon, to explain other phenomena through music, and to communicate in and through music. Music and metaphors, like narratives, are culturally, socially, and temporally situated, and their meanings change with and are changed by the interplay of sound, story, and experience. In this chapter we explore metaphors in music and music teaching and learning, and the ways these are drawn on in narrative learning and life. We present the metaphor of “Resonant Work” to describe a framework for a narrative research and practice ethic and illustrate this with examples of resonant narrative research.
