ABSTRACT
The array of eventualities which might face the athlete during preparation and competition is vast. They can completely knock the athlete out of his stride or, at the very least, create distraction and doubt. This chapter presents a way of analysing and preparing for difficult conditions. It also presents a list of competitive conditions and for each condition the individual athlete is asked to consider: the most challenging possibility; the best way of preparing for the eventuality; and how the condition might serve as an advantage. Some possibilities the athlete might consider in preparing for eventualities include: simulation, visualization, and developing strategies. The will to win emphasize a commitment to address six further eventualities – unfavourable living conditions; decisions going against athletes; odds not in their favour; difficult opponent's styles; falling behind; and the final effort. A final and special aspect of resourcefulness is the ability to cope effectively with injury the curse of the modern athlete at all levels.
