ABSTRACT

Respect in the workplace encompasses many things, but first and foremost it must result in a comfortable work environment. Criticism is never easy for an individual to accept, but when it comes from someone that an individual respects and knows respects him or her, it is easier to accept. It is the accepting of, and ultimately acting on the criticism that brings about improved performance. If staff members are treated with respect, then they are their own best source of motivation. The first step in improving respect for diversity is communication. Management within the operation requires a greater respect for the values and cultures of all staff members. The manager is a critical element in any operation's success in creating and maintaining an atmosphere of respect in the workplace. The manager who models respect and makes it clear that all employees are valued will achieve that atmosphere of respect.
