ABSTRACT

This chapter describes some strategies specifically designed to help pupils who are involved in bullying situations. The first, the Method of Shared Concern, aims to change the behaviour of the bullying pupils; the second, Assertiveness Training, aims to teach bullied pupils how to resist bullying attempts. Mild sanctions can be useful in responding to one-off incidents of bullying which do not result in actual physical harm. A reprimand may be sufficient to deter a pupil from continuing with name-calling or mild teasing. Pupils often feel very justified in their bullying behaviour. They perceive that the bullied pupil 'asked for it' in some way. The assertive pupil will respond to the bullying pupil by stating their intentions, wishes and/or feelings clearly and directly. Work with all pupils to encourage rejection of bullying values within the peer group and work with the bullying pupils to stop and prevent farther bullying incidents need to run alongside the assertiveness training for bullied pupils.
