This chapter examines some of the crises that can occur and how best to respond to them in a conscious, thought-out manner. Natural disasters can create humanitarian disasters where the safety and health of a large group of people can be affected. The crisis is not over when the event is over. That is usually when the emotional crisis continues. Depending on the type of disaster, the scope of the crisis may be very far-reaching. A traumatic event can be any type of event that impacts the population. A suicide, a loss due to illness, a tragic car accident, or any other devastating situation, has its own set of events and should be treated as a crisis within the school. Bullies, drugs, weapons, fights, theft, bombs, gang violence, and threats are commonplace within the schools. Violence in schools is not a new problem, but it is becoming a crisis. Crisis Preparation is essential to being a successful leader.
