ABSTRACT

Since April 2010, I have been covering immigration issues as a reporter for Le Monde, France’s newspaper of record, based in Paris. This has coincided with a momentous time for understanding immigrants and immigration processes because, from May 2007 to May 2012, France had a president, Nicolas Sarkozy, who put immigration at the top of his political agenda. For those five years, immigration was one of the main topics of political debate in France, to a degree that had never been reached before. So, as a journalist, immigration was also a very specific—daily—exercise.
