ABSTRACT

There have been clear and signi cant changes in the structure of the urban retailing system since the 1960s, especially linked to the growth of out-of-town shopping centres associated with decentralisation. There are clear implications for urban regeneration in the UK as the changing daytime economy of central areas is a continuing major policy issue, reinforced by the global economic downturn since the late 2000s. Retail regeneration has formed an important part of many UK central government regeneration policies including Enterprise Zones and Urban Development Corporations (see Chapter 3), and retailing has an important indirect impact on neighbourhood initiatives such as New Deal for Communities (see Chapter 5).
