ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the state of progress in institutionalizing gender equity issues in water sector. It presents an overview of gender relations in Nepali society and integration of gender in the development plans of Nepal in general. The chapter also reviews the way the issue of gender equity is addressed in the current irrigation policy. It also presents irrigation officers' perspective on implementing gender equity in irrigation policies and the associated complexities and challenges. The chapter addresses gender equity issues at the farm level. It argues that identifies gaps in policy prescriptions and practices. The chapter discusses forth empirical evidence to substantiate and understand gender equity, irrigation practice and policy linkages. In irrigation sector, water policy of Nepal has addressed the issues of social equity to some extent.
