ABSTRACT

Over the past three decades, smart growth has experienced tremendous expansion in the United States in terms of strength and influence, both as a movement and as a set of values and ideas. However, currently, although many experts agree with such development, there are still contradictory feelings about the exact position of smart growth. From the point of view of many world-renowned scholars, smart growth as an influential urban movement has been able to promote important changes in urban growth and performance. Nevertheless, everyone does not consider smart growth to be as important as what some of its supporters believe. This chapter discusses the critiques of smart growth from the points of view of different scholars in academic circles.
