ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of how to write and publish an academic book review. It presents a discussion of what information and assessment a book review needs to include, tips for approaching and working with book review editors, and ideas for dealing with some of the unique challenges posed by the genre. The chapter also provides a glimpse into the editing process and outlines the importance of book reviews in academia. The first step to writing a book review is securing a publication venue, which requires a little bit of research on the appropriate journals. Journals take a variety of approaches to publishing reviews, so it’s a good idea to contact the book review editor and ask how s/he handles reviews. Book reviews are important to authors, reviewers, and readers. While book reviews may not seem to be the most exciting academic genre, that doesn’t have to be the case.
