ABSTRACT

Serious empirical study of the connection between the pressure of home demand and export performance is relatively recent. This chapter turns to consider the problem of testing at the national level the hypothesis that the internal pressure of demand adversely affects United Kingdom (UK) export performance. It describes and compares the main results of several studies which directly or indirectly bear upon the relationship of pressure of demand to UK export performance. These are: R. J. Ball, J. R. Eaton and M. D. Steuer, 'The relationship between United Kingdom export performance in manufactures and the internal pressure of demand'; and the O. E. C. D. study by F. G. Adams, H. Eguchi and Meyer-zu-Schlochtern, An Econometric Analysis of International Trade; Renton, 'Forecasting British exports of manufactures to industrial countries'; and Smyth, 'Stop-go and United Kingdom exports of manufactures.
