ABSTRACT

A questionnaire format was necessary to understand students’ accent attitudes from a broad perspective before exploring subtler and more complex attitudes in relation to identity. Whilst the quantitative data are an important starting point to understand both teachers’ and students’ accent attitudes from a broader perspective, this chapter focuses on qualitative data to amplify, corroborate, validate or rebut the quantitative results. The study uses both questionnaire and interview as instruments to explore the extent to which Chinese university students and teachers perceive their own and other English accents. In the part of the questionnaire, the students were encouraged to provide additional comments based on their individual knowledge of and attitudes towards English accents. The part of the questionnaire includes multiple-choice questions that are divided into three categories: beliefs on English accents, beliefs on students’ own accents and orientations towards pronunciation teaching.
