ABSTRACT

In 1954, President Eisenhower gave a speech on the political situation in Indochina in which he introduced a dominant metaphor used by succeeding US administrations to justify American political and military involvement in Vietnam. He said: “You have a row of dominoes set up. You knock over the first one and what will happen to the last one is a certainty that it will go over very quickly.” The domino theory has been the target of much criticism since the Vietnam War ended. What are your thoughts on this? Was the domino theory a valid strategic rationale for American involvement in Vietnam?
