ABSTRACT

SKA Rating is a Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) sustainability assessment method that helps landlords and tenants assess fit-out projects against a set of sustainability good practice criteria. Previously, although there were established tools for assessing the environmental impact of new builds, existing buildings were a blind spot in the industry. It is estimated that 11% of UK construction spending is on fit-outs and that buildings may have 30–40 fit-outs during their lifecycle. Therefore, the creation of SKA Rating in 2009 looked to address this gap in the market. Since then it has become a widely adopted assessment method with over 6,000 users and 687 certified projects.
