COUNCILLOR AGAZZI’s drawing room. lamberto laudisi is pacing the room, nervously. He has a quiet elegance and a very quick wit. He constantly sips a glass of wine. amalia agazzi and her daughter dina are watching him. amalia is self-important and overly aware of her husband’s position in society. Her manner makes it quite clear that she believes she could not only supplant but outdo him on any given occasion. dina has a vibrant, youthful charm that compensates for her tendency to know better than anyone else, especially her parents.
