ABSTRACT

Indigenous education is a part of the oldest intellectual tradition in North America. Though only a few decades old, Faculties of Education and Indigenous education institutions in every province in Canada offer Western-style formal preparation in Indigenous education. This chapter traces the development of Indigenous teacher education historically and in current university programs in Canada in light of social developments and policies in Indigenous and settler colonial societies. It also explores the path forward for future Indigenous teacher education that will meet the educational and self-determination goals of Indigenous communities and support efforts for reconciliation between Indigenous and settler peoples. Indigenous societies have traditionally viewed the teaching of values, life skills, and necessary knowledge for survival as a sacred trust. The move away from residential schools opened up a new era in Indigenous education, along with new requirements for Indigenous educators and educators prepared to teach in Indigenous contexts.
