ABSTRACT

The rituals that have honored Andy’s death have been essential pieces of my grieving process. The wake, funeral, and circle of friends that I’ve described were central to my sanity in that first seven days. Since Andy had been his generous self while at Stanford, the University knew him from his volunteer efforts, and it was supportive of a tree being placed in his honor outside of his former residence hall. My daughter Carrie spearheaded the project, and along with the Stanford professionals with whom she worked, she was very committed to creating this symbol for our family.
