ABSTRACT
Certosa di padula, Provincia Salerno, was a monastery built in the fourteenth century, with a great main building that had an inner court, with many loggias and cloisters, with cellars and catacombs, with a heavy main gate barring the outer world and an inner gate leading to a great domain. This domain was miles wide, with old cypress avenues and olive hedges, and a space in the middle where sixty barracks were built, and the whole was surrounded with thick old walls as high as a house, on the walls the guardhouses, from which Italian sentries watched us, had been built.
