ABSTRACT

Various kinds of measurements were carried out during large underground cavern excavation to elucidate rock behavior as a discontinuous material. As a result, rock behavior was estimated in detail, such as characteristics of rack propagation, displacement and stress redistribution. A particular discontinuity was recognized to have much influence to the behavior. Then, a simulation by employing discrete element method considering the discontinuity was carried out, and the result showed the same trend as the observed behavior. Biaxial shearing tests using block specimens were also carried out to study the influence of the initial discontinuities to the rock behavior.
