ABSTRACT

Following a rule is an important topic in Wittgenstein’s later philosophy. In this paper I shall first give a brief account of some significant changes in Wittgenstein’s views on rules in language. Then I shall offer some remarks on the role of the rule-following discussion in the Philosophical Investigations in the light of those changes. Finally, I shall point out some noteworthy differences between Wittgenstein’s discussion of following a rule in the Investigations and his remarks on rules in the context of his philosophy of mathematics, which originally was also intended to become part of the book.
