ABSTRACT

Anaerobic biofilm treatment system is an effective strategy for wastewater treatment due to their distinctive advantages over other conventional treatment technologies. Anaerobic biofilm reactors have the potential for the treatment of domestic and industrial effluents as well as biogas production. Biofilm-based anaerobic wastewater treatment system is a rapidly expanding study area that has been explored intensively in literature. Studies have shown that biofilm anaerobic treatment can be considered as a well-proven technology for which good design and scale-up guidance are available. This chapter briefly explains the beneficial use of biofilm anaerobic treatment systems and a critical discussion on a large number of recent investigations that have dealt with biofilm-based anaerobic treatment systems. It also explains biofilm development on filter media and factors affecting the development as well as structure and function of biofilm.
