ABSTRACT

This chapter shows that integrated pest management (IPM) is a US term and most other countries use IPC or Integrated Pest Control. To many people, IPM means the use of only biological control measures. To others, IPM implies the use of non-chemical control measures. The correct use of chemicals is certainly one of these control measures. This was brought out in the workshops yesterday and today. Included in the definition of the word "correct" is the choice of the right chemical, applied at the right rate and at the right time. In Case Report 68 it was stated that controlling weeds in corn by hand labor at the average farm labor price of $2,65 per hour in 1976 resulted in a net loss of $66 per acre. The net profit due to use of a herbicide was $78. Chemical control in many instances has been used to attempt total elimination of the pest from a crop.
