ABSTRACT

This chapter aims at identifying the role of the Corinth Canal in the development of the short sea shipping transport system of Southeastern Europe. The Corinth Canal, construction of which was completed in the nineteenth century, is considered to be one of the biggest technical undertakings in Greece. The chapter includes the findings of a survey conducted for the Corinth Canal authorities and concludes with certain propositions so that the Canal can revitalise and upgrade its position in the short sea shipping network of the Southeastern Europe. The importance of the Canal for the short sea shipping network of the Southeastern European region lies mainly in the advantages that the Canal offers to the sea trade at a national and international level. The Canal's role would be special since it can offer its services to the small sea-river-going vessels, not only because of the time economy it offers but also the safety it provides.
