ABSTRACT

Wave propagation in dry and saturated granular solids is modelled numerically with the use of the hypoplastic constitutive equation. Owing to the contraction of the material in shear, a transverse wave propagating in a dry granular solid induces a longitudinal wave with double the frequency of the transverse wave. Propagation of a transverse wave in a saturated medium can result in the reduction of the effective stress to zero and, as a consequence, in the liquefaction of the medium. An example of the modelling of liquefaction during an earthquake in presented.
