ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the formal care experiences of the seven informants, namely Eloise Little, Ruby Washington, Viola Worth, Reverend Joseph Scott, Lucy Oliver, Geraldine Starr, and Sally Finch. It focuses on the care they receive in their homes from home care aides, often described as the “backbone” of home care. For each of these seven clients, the Community Care Services Program (CCSP) provides, or at one time was providing, the greater part of their community-based services. Each person has been enrolled in CCSP for at least three years; three have been receiving CCSP services for five years. CCSP provides for client assessment, case management, and for a range of other services, including: Adult Day Rehabilitation, Alternative Living Services, Home-delivered health services, and Emergency Response System. In most cases, Medicare services are furnished by the same agencies that provide CCSP services; however, CCSP case managers are not involved in their management.
