ABSTRACT

The lunchtime supervisor’s work may be challenging, but it is rarely boring. As well as ensuring that children have lunch, and the opportunity to play, skilled LTSs are helping, and often teaching, children to eat, play, socialise, co-exist and deal with conflict and friendships. In other words, they are encouraging children to become rounded and civilised human beings. LTSs are required to keep large numbers of children safe, to manage their behaviour and to listen and respond to their problems (which may at times be serious). They are required to encourage healthy eating, to initiate and sustain play, to tolerate severe weather conditions, to prevent and respond to accidents, to be aware of bullying and to be sensitive to cultural and social issues.
