ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the role of the governor with responsibility for Special Educational Needs (SEN) in the primary school. It outlines the major legislative responsibilities of the governing body in respect of special educational needs, followed by an examination, in the form of a 'case study', of an SEN policy in a county infant school. The chapter analyses the role of the governor responsible for SEN in the school, moving on to a discussion of the constraints operating against wholly effective functioning within that role. It deals with a consideration of some implications of this position for improving practice. The chapter examines by means of an original case study of a county infants school and its governing body, the role of the governor responsible for SEN. It highlights the increased responsibilities that the governing body has for SEN.
