ABSTRACT

Applied sport psychology theory and techniques are frequently used in youth sport settings to prepare children and adolescents for sport performance and life. In this chapter, the authors explore how psychological skills training can provide youth athletes with a foundation to learn to perform and train at an enhanced level as they develop long term. Further, the authors describe the psychological skills training programme at USTA Player Development to illustrate how to train psychological skills from childhood, through the teenage years, and into high performance. Practical methods that are used with developing high performance tennis players are presented throughout.
