ABSTRACT
Combat Stress attracts help-seeking veterans, who are the neediest in terms of mental illness. They most commonly suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which is present with co-morbid illness such as depression and alcohol misuse disorders. Clinical services provided are based in the community and in three residential centres across the United Kingdom, and they are designed to maximise access and engagement into treatment. This chapter describes these clinical services delivered by multidisciplinary clinicians. Overall, the average time lag for veterans, from the time when they leave the military to the time when they access help from Combat Stress, has been reducing from an average of 14 years in 2007 to 13.2 years in 2015. Causes for delayed presentation include issues concerning stigma and the belief that the individual does not think they are ill and do not need help to solve their own problems.
