ABSTRACT

The drug must be compatible with other fluids with which it may be combined for administration to the patient, as well as with the components of the blood itself. Oral includes buccal and sublingual, but these will be considered separately. The oral route is the commonly used route for the administration of drugs both because of ease of administration and because it is the readily accepted route of administration. Test materials may be administered as solutions or suspensions as long as they are homogeneous and delivery is accurate. Administration of drug in a capsule is a common means of dosing larger test animals. The administration of drugs to the surface of the eyes is not a common route for systemic drug administration due to the small surface area exposed and the efficiency of the protective mechanisms. Since a number of therapeutic compounds are given in the form of suppositories, an indication of the toxicity after rectal administration is sometimes required.
