ABSTRACT

Any sporting event is defined and played within a predetermined framework of rules and the number and complexity of these rules may differ significantly. The process for changing them occurs within the environment of a governing body or administrators, but little is known about why they occur. Traditional sport that is played today is the product of many years of evolution and development, but little is known as to why these rules change. This chapter will review literature regarding rule changes in sport and will identify and categorise why rules change in sport and will investigate the use of notation in tracking the changes.
