ABSTRACT

This chapter analyses the current state of EU-Russia relations in terms of the dynamic of the interface of the logics of sovereignty and integration in the policies of both parties. It presents the key principles of the conflict theory developed in the Understanding Conflict between Russia and the EU. The chapter analyses a number of statements on EU-Russia relations in the contemporary Russian political discourse in order to demonstrate the abandonment of the integrationist paradigm in Russia's orientation towards Europe, conditioned by the more fundamental process of the destitution of the very figure of Europe in the symbolic order of contemporary Russian politics. It addresses the implications of destitution for the EU-Russia interaction and discusses the potential of remobilizing the idea of Europe in the wider domain of social practices in contemporary Russia.
