ABSTRACT

There are also a number of specialized safety systems which are unique to specific industries such as the System Safety methodology and the Process Safety System for the petroleum industry. The system safety concept calls for a risk management strategy based on identification, analysis of hazards, and application of remedial controls using a systems-based approach. Process safety management is an analytical tool focused on preventing releases of any substance defined as a "highly hazardous chemical" by the Environmental Protection Agency or the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. Process safety management refers to a set of interrelated approaches to manage hazards related to the process industry. The Guidelines present practical approaches and tools for assisting organizations, competent national institutions, employers, workers and health management systems, with the aim of reducing work-related injuries, ill health, diseases, and deaths.
