ABSTRACT
This chapter explores how support staff should have a clear understanding of their roles and responsibilities. Supporting staff should have knowledge of their job description; maintain a professional demeanor with parents; be aware of school policies with regard to behaviour, anti-bullying, child protection; and respect the confidentiality of information for all pupils. They should be aware of channels of communication within the school: ensure that information given by parents is given to the appropriate member of staff class teacher, SENCO, must ensure that communication with outside agencies is carried out in consultation with the SENCO. Support staff should be supported with appropriate on-going professional development, observe and learn from other professionals in school and in other establishments, undertake training in school and through external courses. Support staff should encourage the pupils independence at all times that promote independent work habits, independent life skills and independent play skills.
