In Italy, archaeology is traditionally identified with the study of antiquity, especially classical antiquity. Inspired by this pioneering work and in light of the current trend for an archaeology of the recent past, over the past few years the Archaeology Office of the Autonomous Province of Trento has conducted fieldwork investigating the archaeology of the First World War. Punta Linke was one of the most important Austro-Hungarian positions of the entire Alpine front during the First World War, a front that in that area ran along the frontier between the Kingdom of Italy and the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The transit station for the cableway, built within the glacial deposit, consisted of a hut with flat roof and rectangular plan that on one side abutted the rock face. Understanding how to study the meaning of sensory experience in different cultures is an important development in recent anthropological, historical and social research.
