ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book focuses on school development and school improvement and a variety of approaches and strategies, including that of external audit. For schools to achieve meaningful change and improvement, school itself needs to be in the driving seat with the head teacher providing necessary leadership. Changes emanating from within school itself need encouragement and support from the head and the senior management team. External audits, such as those currently undertaken by Office for Standards in Education (OFSTED), provide schools with a baseline from which they can look to future improvement. However, OFSTED claims that inspection provides an objective account of 'where the school is and where it might go in the future'. The book explains that schools need resources to use consultants but, they also need to learn how to make good use of them.
