ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book contributes to an ongoing process of development within the field of Islamic studies, where the study of Muslim communities in Europe and North America is experimenting with theories and methods which may be useful in broadening and deepening Islamic studies more generally. It looks more closely at how Islamic studies have responded to these changes, and the potentials which the approaches assembled in this volume have for the further development of the subject. The book in the present volume illustrates the potentials of this analysis across a spectrum ranging from DeHanas' study at the edge of institutionalised Islam to the maximum distance in the work of Jeldtoft and Otterbeck. The political drivers of the subject especially from the 1990s with rising security concerns among politicians, the security services and the general public.
