ABSTRACT
In his recent writing on education, Zygmunt Bauman has drawn attention to the work of Margaret Mead and her life companion, Gregory Bateson. Mead said:
The Social Structure of a society and the way learning is structured – the way it passes from mother to daughter, from father to son, from mother’s brother to sister’s son, from shaman to novice, from mythological specialists to explained specialists – determine far beyond the actual content of the learning both how individuals will learn to think and how the store of learning, the sum total of separate pieces of skill and knowledge … is shared and used.
