ABSTRACT

This chapter offers a quick overview of the main theoretical roots and their modes of articulation into the Schutzian conception of the multiple realities: Max Weber, Henri Bergson, Edmund Husserl, William James, and Ludwig von Mises. The main concepts that were important to the development of the Schutzian FPM idea, such as the Bergsonian durée, attention à la vie and the Husserlian epochè, natural attitude or life-world are presented. This overview is followed by a step-by-step discussion of the concepts and ideas introduced by Schutz in the first part of the paper that is treated in this book as ‘core text’ related to the FPM problem, On Multiple Realities. The foundation of his FPM theory is discussed here along with the first part of the Schutzian ‘core text’ highlighting their unclear aspects or some striking omissions of Schutz’s logical articulations.
