ABSTRACT

SCIENCE HAS BEEN STEADILY EXPROPRIATED by the medicalprofession over hundreds of years to support its premises and procedures, and to further its occupational status.

Most of the other disease disciplines have followed medicine’s lead in espousing a scientific justification for their role and prestige. Whether it’s nursing, midwifery, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, or audiology, science (in the guise of ‘evidencebased practice’) has been commandeered to legitimise knowledge and practice.
