ABSTRACT

Einstein’s conceptual scheme could not have been worlds apart from that of Tagore. A scientist aims at being detached and unbiased in his investigation of the world. There seems to be no difference between Einstein and Tagore on this account. Tagore keeps shifting between the domains of metaphysics and epistemology. According to him, the infinite being expresses himself through the medium of finitude, the world. The finite world is only the medium through which the infinite is expressed. Science is not willing to accept the paradox of the infinite assuming finitude. Tagore insists the paradox cannot be wished away. It appears that Einstein took Tagore to believe if there is no human mind then there is no world either. That was not Tagore’s contention. He held that if there is no human mind then there is no humanly known world. When Tagore deals with the broad outline of science he comes very close to Einstein, when Tagore deals with religion he moves worlds apart. Drawing from Tagore’s Sadhana, Personality and The Religion of Man the present chapter attempts to highlight the points where Tagore comes close to Einstein and where he moves away.
