ABSTRACT

It has been known for more than a century that dogs can be taught to alert to very speci c scents and chemicals,1 yet it was only in the 1970s, with narcotics and explosives detection dogs, that this skill began to have forensic applications.2 Because of the high value of speci c substance detection for law enforcement, this canine skill and its potential applications have received a great deal of scienti c and forensic study and will undoubtedly continue to be a major area of forensics research.
