ABSTRACT
Research studies have evaluated screening for excessive alcohol consumption, alcohol abuse, hospital diagnosis of alcoholism and alcohol dependence. Some of these are dimensional rather than categorical, i.e. there is a continuum between those with the disorder and the rest of the population, but this need not be a serious problem. What is essential however are clear criteria to define a case.
