ABSTRACT

When we are exploring sport, development and peace (SDP) programmes across the globe issues surrounding the involvement of people with impairment are complex. Even in the ‘developed world’ provision of sport and leisure opportunities for individuals with impairment (those who are disabled by society) are more restrictive than for members of the mainstream population. In this chapter I will highlight foundational issues that we should consider when exploring the efficacy of SDP programmes for impaired populations. To start I will highlight briefly the politics of the terminology used in disability studies before turning my attention to issues of human rights and sport as they impact upon impaired populations. This discussion will be followed by a brief mention of ‘sport for all’ before I conclude by highlighting the need for SDP programmes becoming more inclusive.
