ABSTRACT

This is a session with a mother (M), father (F), and daughter (D) discussing their 18-year-old son and brother, Bob, who is presently incarcerated in prison. He’ll be getting a temporary release from prison for a home visit. Dad works as the captain of his own boat, which brings cargo to oil platforms at sea. He says when he is out, all he can do is fish, clean the boat, and play cards because there is no television reception when he is so far away from shore. He can’t even swim because of sharks. Mom says he’s been doing this for 30 years. “In the old days, it was wild; now you have to be concerned about safety.” He took his son out to sea with him before he began serving time. The session takes place outside of New Orleans.
