In search of the learned society

Learned societies are a familiar feature of academia. They represent and connect disciplines; they offer validity, kudos and a sense of identity. Indeed, learned societies not only facilitate organisation within a discipline, they also help make it tangible, garner respect and sustain it. Alongside universities, they are the organisational bedrock on which academia operates and are often how it communicates with wider society.
