ABSTRACT

This chapter explores therapist illness as a possible sign of vicarious trauma and source of secondary traumatisation for clients and therapists. We look at the impact of breast cancer and its treatment on three dramatherapists. Their personal stories interweave therapist and client experiences. The importance of supervision, self-care, and negotiating fitness to practice arising from the illness are highlighted. Underlying issues are the different phases of recovery and the re-finding of therapist confidence in their creativity as a crucial element in that recovery, while staying aware of the impact of always “being in remission” rather than cured.
