ABSTRACT
In Demonstration of the Apostolic Preaching, throughout the expression of the thought of Irenaeus there is no disjunction between word and act. There is no indulgence in 'bare words' of abstractions, philosophy for the sake of philosophy only, or of reducing the faith to a 'plausible system'. The language used in this chapter would suggest that the name was indeed that of a friend and not a stylized device. That the larger work referred to in this first section is indeed Adversus Haereses, is clear. Godliness as applied as a description of the quality of human existence and action is a secondary matter, though necessarily following from the primary consideration. The composition of human being is not regarded as a static, subjectivized image, but is a matter of body and soul in their totality related to God, which relation is regarded by Irenaeus as the 'spirit'.
